I'd also recommend the rather tender investigation by another musician Gruff Rhys into a Welsh pioneer's 17th century journey into the "American Interior" on the trail of a Welsh legend. Both of those films feature extraordinary characters who might not be out of place in an animation by the influential Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, who co-founded his Studio Ghibli and whose best-known works include the 2003 Oscar-winning "Spirited Away" as well as "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Howl's Moving Castle". Miyazaki's now 73 and he's indicated that the film out this week "The Wind Rises" will be his last. It's clearly very personal and is based on the life of a real aircraft engineer fascinated like Miyazaki himself by flying and the element wind that makes it possible. To put this valedictory work in the context of Miyazaki's career, we spoke to Andrew Osmond, author of the BFI monograph on "Spirited Away", to Nick Bradshaw editor of Sight & Sound online and critic Lurishika Evanzede.

He's so huge in Japan. I mean, he's always called the Walter Disney of Japan and I would say that to people who haven't heard of him, just, just give a sense of how big he is over there. "Spirited Away", his 2000 film is the biggest grossing film in Japan of all time. I mean the top five grossing films of Japan, three of them are his films. He's absolutely huge.

He was very determined to work on higher quality productions partly by his determinations, partly by luck. He was able to be involved in his own studio, Studio Ghibli.

Part of the point of founding Studio Ghibli was to build a position of independence. He's found there's amazing balance in active being able to make blockbuster films and make them as beautiful and detailed and personal as possible.
